Newcastle United have rejected approaches from West Brom and Stoke City for striker Dwight Gayle, according to Football Insider.

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at West Brom and scored 24 goals as the Baggies reached the Championship play-offs.

Albion are keen for Gayle to return to the Hawthorns this season - either on loan or a permanent deal - and have made contract with Newcastle over a possible transfer.

Stoke have also enquired about the forward, with manager Nathan Jones keen to strengthen his attacking options as he looks to build a team that can challenge for promotion this season.

However, this latest report states that Newcastle have rejected approaches from both clubs, with new manager Steve Bruce keen to keep the striker at St James' Park.

Bruce took charge at Newcastle last month after leaving Sheffield Wednesday and is determined to keep hold of Gayle, after Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez, and Joselu all left the club this summer.

The Verdict

Gayle is a fantastic player and he'd be an excellent signing for either West Brom or Stoke. He's got plenty of experience in the Championship and knows exactly what it takes to score goals at this level.

It doesn't appear as if there is any chance of Gayle leaving Newcastle this summer though, as Bruce seems determined to keep the player at St James' Park.

With just a couple of days to go until the transfer window, both clubs may have to turn their attention elsewhere if they want to sign a striker before the deadline.
