Newcastle United's official website is reporting that defender Paul Dummett has praised the team's professional performance last night.

After Brighton and Hove Albion beat Birmingham City on Tuesday night, the pressure was on Newcastle United to match that win and head back to the top of the league.

They were tasked with breaking down a resilient Burton Albion side who were keen to pick up points for their relegation battle.

After Matt Ritchie's penalty was controversially disallowed, it looked like it was going to be a frustrating night for the Magpies.

But Ritchie persevered and notched the winner in a narrow 1-0 victory over the spirited Brewers.

Newcastle's left back Paul Dummett was full of praise for the performance, noting that it was crucially important that they picked up the three points in the quest for automatic promotion.

The win maintained a ten point gap over third place and Paul Dummett said:

“We knew we had to stay focused.

"Our job was to win the game, and we had to let the referee do his job.

"We had to concentrate on ourselves and not get drawn into his mistakes.

"We kept on going, and we got what we deserved.

“If we hadn’t have won, it’d have been even worse, and there’d be more complaints and more said (about the penalty incident).

"But, it was a positive performance from us.

"Burton defended deep all game, and I’d guess we had a high amount of possession.

"They came to frustrate us, and in keeping it to 1-0, they did quite well with that.

"Three points was all that mattered, though, and that’s what we’ve got.”
