As we approach the halfway mark of the Championship season, Ipswich sit ninth in the league and five points away from the play-offs.

Whilst Mick McCarthy's men weren't tipped to be mixing it with the best in the league at the start of the season, the Irish manager has done a wonderful job and will realise that the club could make the play-offs once again this season.

However, the January window will be key to that, although the financial situation at the club means that McCarthy will have to look for cheap deals or loan signings.

Perhaps surprisingly, the problem for the Tractor Boys this season has been in defence, where they have struggled to keep regular clean sheets.

Up top, summer signings Martyn Waghorn and Joe Garner have brough much more firepower to the team and goals aren't really a problem.

So, with that in mind, McCarthy will be looking for defensive reinforcements and maybe another midfielder and here we look at five players he should consider...

Ben Marshall

There will be a lot of competition for Marshall's signature but Ipswich should be looking to see if they can do a deal.

Marcus Evans may need to dip into his pocket more than he would like to fund this signing, but it would be worth it.

The ex-Blackburn man brings a real quality on the ball and versatility too. He could play across the midfield and even as a right wing-back or right-back if needed.

He excelled under Paul Lambert at Wolves and McCarthy seems the sort of manager who would get the best out of Marshall.

Ryan Leonard

Another signing that Ipswich would have to work hard to complete, but again Leonard would be worth it.

Sheffield United are the firm favourites to sign him, but their strict stance in negotiations when dealing with Southend could open the door for Town.

Leonard has a calmness and quality on the ball that would improve the Tractor Boys build-up play and whilst they would have to offer more than the Blades, he is out of contract in the summer so it wouldn't be the most expensive deal.

Kortney Hause

Going back to Wolves, Hause is another outcast Ipswich should go for from Molineux.

Realistically, a loan is the only way he could move to Portman Road but it's a deal that could suit everyone.

Hause can't even get in the squad at the minute but his potential means Wolves won't want to sell. Ipswich need a quality centre-back and the former England U21 international might relish the chance to play and join up with former teammate Dominic Iorfa.

He could be key to a late play-off push.

Matthew Connolly

The Cardiff defender has a history of winning promotion, so he will certainly bring the right mentality to Ipswich.

Connolly can't get near the Cardiff first-team and although injuries have hit at times, it's hard to see how he plays at all this season.

Able to fill in across any position in the back four, the 30-year old could be vital to help Ipswich stop leaking goals.

Jack Colback

Another that would have to join on loan given the cost, Colback would excel under McCarthy.

The tenacious midfielder has a very good all-round game for this level and has the quality to enhance the Ipswich midfield.

Once again, many clubs will be in for him, but if Colback can be tempted to Portman Road then Ipswich will be a lot stronger for it.
