Chris Hughton is keen on making Christian Atsu his first signing as Nottingham Forest boss, although Watford are also interested in the wide man.

The former Brighton chief was named as Sabri Lamouchi's successor last night and he appears to have wasted little time in looking to strengthen his squad.

That's after Football Insider claimed that the Reds are working on a deal to bring Atsu to the City Ground from Newcastle United before the deadline on October 16.

However, the East Midlands outfit don't have a free run at this signing, as the update states that Watford are also monitoring the Ghana international and a loan deal could be reached as the Premier League side want to shift Atsu from their wage bill.

The 28-year-old has made just one brief appearance for Steve Bruce this season, as a late substitute in a League Cup tie, whilst he has failed to make the match day squad for the other five fixtures.

Atse featured in 32 games as Newcastle won the Championship title in 2016/17 under Rafa Benitez.

The verdict

You can understand why the two clubs want to sign Atsu as he has a lot to offer at this level. He is quick, direct and would provide quality from his left foot.

Given how far he is down the pecking order at Newcastle, a deal seems pretty straightforward and it will ultimately come down to the player and where he wants to go.

Forest will hope Hughton's appointment can seal the deal but Watford are clearly a very good team as well, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
