According to reports in the Portuguese media, Newcastle United have been listed as one of the clubs who may make an audacious swoop for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

As reported by The Chronicle's live rolling news [Wednesday 12th April, 11:15 GMT], Portuguese media outlet A Bola believe that Newcastle United could be a potential destination.

The Magpies, who look set to return to the Premier League via the automatic promotion places, have been listed alongside Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion in the hunt for the highly coveted Portugal international.

The 25-year-old is under contract with Sporting CP until 2020 but due to financial problems, he might be sold this summer to raise funds.

There are varying reports on the asking price for William Carvalho with The Chronicle's Chris Waugh saying that Sporting CP want £40m whilst talkSport believe that they would be willing to sell at around £30m to balance their books.

Either way, any move from Newcastle would smash their record transfer fee, which currently stands at £21.25m, which they paid for Real Madrid's Michael Owen in 2005, according to transfermarkt.
