Derby County’s new addition Jonathan Mitchell was recommended by Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley.
The 19 year old goalkeeper is to join Derby on a free transfer on a one year deal when his contract expires at Newcastle this month.
Peter Beardsley, the former England International who is involved with the Newcastle Under 21s spoke to Derby’s goalkeeping coach Eric Steele about Mitchell and played a part in him joining the Rams.
Steele said ”Jonathan is going to be a good addition to the goalkeeping department. He is 19 years old and completed his first year as a professional last season. I spoke to some good friends of mine, Peter Beardsley and Chris Terpcou, the Newcastle Academy goalkeeping coach and they only had good things to say about him.
Eric Steele who joined Derby with Steve McClaren and Paul Simpson in October is encouraged by the quality of goalkeepers that are currently at the club. Kelle Roos, Jonathan Mitchell, Mats Morch and Ross Etheridge are all behind number one Lee Grant but to stake a claim in the first-team squad.
”We brought Kelle Roos in from Nuneaton Town in January and he has learnt, had a taste of the first-team environment. Mats Morch and Ross Etheridge are developing too. They have gone out and played at Gresley and Ilkeston and have come back with match experience.
