Newcastle join race for Watford starlet

Championship winners Newcastle United are to lock horns with West Ham in the race for Watford youngster Dion Pereira, according to The London Evening Standard.

The 18-year-old winger has made his way up through the youth ranks at Vicarage Road over the past few years, and was rewarded for his hard work with his senior debut in their 3-0 defeat to Leicester City earlier this month.

And he earned his second Premier League appearance with a 16-minute cameo in their 5-0 loss at home to Manchester City on the final day of the season, although he has yet to put pen-to-paper on a professional contract at the Hertfordshire-based club.

And this appears to have alerted a whole host of clubs around England, most notably Slaven Bilic’s West Ham, and Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle.

The Magpies will be returning to the top-flight next season after clinching the Championship title at the first time of asking, winning 29 of their 46 matches to beat Brighton to top spot, and they have already been busy in the transfer market, securing the permanent signing of winger Christian Atsu following a successful loan spell.

And it appears that Benitez is planning for the long-term given his reported interest in Pereira, but whether the 18-year-old signs for Newcastle, another club, or indeed stays at Watford very much remains to be seen.
