Newcastle could make a move for Portuguese defender Ruben Semedo, according to a report in Portuguese news outlet A Bola.

The 23-year-old has become a regular fixture in the team at current club Sporting Lisbon, and has made six appearances for his national under-21 side.

Semedo, who can also operate as midfielder, has reportedly got a £38m release clause in his contract with the Lisbon club, and this is something which could well tempt manager Rafa Benitez into splashing half his transfer budget on.

The versatile Semedo has 29 appearances this term for Sporting, who have once again fallen short of rivals Benfica in the race for the league title. Their failure to once again win the title has cast doubt over a few of their star names, and Semedo could be one who is snapped up this summer.

Newcastle are looking to strengthen their squad their squad ahead of the Premier League campaign, and although Semedo looks a viable option, many Toon fans would be surprised to see Benitez splash so much cash on one player it would seem.

However, with the North East club needing quality in their ranks, it might well be that this is the sort of fee they need to part with to ensure they maintain Premier League status.
