Newcastle United have been boosted by news that Ciaran Clark is approaching a return to first team action, The Chronicle reports.

In his press conference ahead of Monday night’s clash with Preston North End, Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez revealed that Ciaran Clark had been training and that he could be available this weekend.

Following some questionable defensive displays recently from centre backs Jamaal Lascelles and Grant Hanley, Clark’s imminent return is likely to be a major boost to Newcastle fans, who have started peering over their shoulders in the race for automatic promotion.

The Magpies have picked up just one point in their last three games and Reading and Huddersfield have closed the gap as a result.

However, Newcastle still have a fairly commanding lead over the chasing pack and a win over Preston should ease their worries.

Newcastle fans will be delighted that the Republic of Ireland international is set to return to boost their promotion hopes.

Newcastle fans – is this a boost? Who would you start at centre back against Preston? Let us know in the comments below…
