Newcastle United are going toe-to-toe with Premier League outfit Crystal Palace for the signature of Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic, according to The Daily Mail.
The 22-year-0ld Croatian has featured five times for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season after returning to full fitness and remains a big part of the Northern Irishman’s plans north of the border, following the breakdown of a £4m switch to Serie A outfit Torino in the summer.
Rodgers has been vocal in his support for the young defender, who he believes is a big talent, but they face the risk of losing the player’s services in January, as both Newcastle and Palace are monitoring the Croatian U21 international.
Newcastle, who currently lead the way in the Championship after 14 matches, want to improve their defence despite securing three clean-sheets in their last four league matches, whilst Palace want to bolster their own defensive line.
However, luring Simunovic away from Celtic could prove to be a difficult task as the youngster has guaranteed European football with the Scottish champions, though Rodgers’ side face a test in the final three matches of the group stages to secure a third-place spot that would see them move to the Europa League knock-out stages.
Simunovic moved to Celtic in 2015 from Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb and has featured in 11 SPL matches for the club so far, scoring one goal.
