‘Good squad signing’, ‘Isn’t near good enough’: Newcastle fans split as winger deal edges closer

Reports coming out of Sky Sports today indicate that Championship winners Newcastle United are in talks to seal a permanent deal for Chelsea’s Christian Atsu.

The 25-year-old spent the season on loan at St James’ Park and did reasonably well, netting five goals and laying on three assists to help Rafa Benitez’s side pip Brighton to the title on the final day of the season.

And now it appears that the Magpies want to strike up a deal with the Premier League champions to secure the permanent signing of Atsu ahead of their return to the top-flight next term.

The North East giants are reportedly eyeing up a £6.2 million deal for the Ghana international as per a clause in his contract, in what could be manager Benitez’s first signing of the summer as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

And news of a potential deal for Atsu has stimulated quite the response from Newcastle fans on Twitter, with some welcoming the news, and others not overly sold in the idea of landing the winger on a permanent basis…
