Accrington Stanley have completed the signing of Newcastle United defender Liam Gibson on loan until the end of the season.
The Premier League side confirmed the news on their official site this afternoon, with the 21-year-old left-back set to give John Coleman another option in that role.
Gibson has been a regular for the Magpies U23s side this season, playing 18 times, whilst he also featured as they managed to reach the last 16 of the Checkatrade Trophy before they lost to rivals Sunderland in the week.
Now, he will be getting competitive football in the third tier and is the second Newcastle player to make the switch to the Wham Stadium, linking up with fellow loanee Dan Barlaser.
The youngster could be given his debut this weekend as Stanley look to get back to winning ways after successive defeats when they host Bristol Rovers. Coleman’s side are currently 13th in the table.
The chance to get out playing regularly will certainly appeal to Gibson, who was forced to miss over a year after he suffered with illness.
This seems like a good move for all parties and after everything that Gibson has been through, he will be relishing the chance to play regularly.
After a very bright start, Accrington have started to stutter and the chance to bring in Gibson will certainly help the squad.
Now it’s down to the youngster to take this chance and to show everyone what he can do in a tough division.
