Sunderland boss Jack Ross has admitted he expects his side to win promotion from League One next season, even if he is unsure about the resources he will have.

The former St. Mirren boss took charge of the Black Cats last week and has not played down the idea that they should be bouncing back to the Championship at the first attempt.

Whilst acknowledging some may take this as arrogance, Ross was quoted by the Telegraph saying that it's important to have clear targets and the one with Sunderland is clear.

"You’ve got to have clear objectives and ambitions and goals. For me, it’s to win promotion. It’s going to be a challenge and there is a lot of work to be done in a short time.

However, the new manager still doesn't know how well he will be backed in the transfer market and revealed he only wants players who want to be on Wearside.

"It’s about trying to identify what we need to get out of this league. It’s a question of who wants to be here."

The Verdict

The Black Cats will be the biggest club in the third tier by a distance and the expectations will be of an instant return to the Championship.

Given that, fans will appreciate these comments from Ross. He's being honest and understands that it's all about promotion this season.

Yet, it won't be easy and he will need to be backed properly by Stewart Donald.
