New Sunderland signing Jordan Willis has sent a message to his new fans after completing his move to the Stadium of Light.

Willis joined Jack Ross's squad on a two-year deal over the weekend on a free transfer after leaving Coventry City in the summer and it sounds like he is rather excited about the move.

Taking to Twitter, the centre-back wrote: "Delighted to have signed for @SunderlandAFC Massive thankyou to everyone for the messages! Can’t wait to get started."

Last season saw Willis make 38 League One appearances for the Sky Blues as they narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs.

And he chose not to extend his contract under Mark Robins and left as a free-agent at the end of June, allowing Ross to snap-up a bargain.

He becomes the Black Cats' third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Lee Burge and Conor McLaughlin as they look to build a squad that can win promotion back to the second-tier.

Last season saw them come agonsisingly closer, with an injury-time winner from Charlton Athletic at Wembley denying them.

The verdict

I think defensive reinforcements were definitely needed at the Stadium of Light.

Although they kept a fair few cleansheets, you could tell that something just was not clicking with plenty of sloppy errors creeping into each 90 minutes.

So adding another proven League One centre-back should lead to others upping their game considerably and ensuring that Ross always has at least one in-form option.

However, I do think that more still needs to be done in this window although the board are right to try and do it without splashing too much cash.
