Derby County are still second in the Championship and looked set for a quiet transfer deadline day until the arrival of Kasey Palmer from Chelsea.

Palmer spent the first half of the season on loan at Huddersfield Town, where he got a promotion from the Championship under his belt last term as well, but saw his loan spell cut short after playing just five times for David Wagner's side.

He is a talented and versatile forward, with a promotion on his CV, which goes some way to explaining why Rowett dived in at the last minute to add him to his squad, along with Johnny Russell's move to Sporting Kansas City.

Palmer has given his first interview to the Rams' official website and said: "The first bits of talk about the move began a few days before Deadline Day and as soon as I heard about it, my head was telling me that I needed to come here.

"As soon as I heard of the interest I was on the internet doing my research on the club, the team and the players here.

"I watched the game the other night too and I’m intrigued to see how I can fit in and help this club achieve what it is setting out to do.

"The club is in a great position. It’s a big club, the facilities are superb, and the manager and team are doing some really good things here.

"This is a club that deserves to be in the Premier League. Everything is set for it to finally get back there and I hope I can add something to the group that will help them get over the line.

"As soon as I heard that this was a possibility, I was keen to get it over the line and as we all know Deadline Day is busy, is full of twists and turns, but I’m delighted to be here now."

The Verdict

Palmer is clearly a talented boy, who knows what it takes to get out of the Championship. He will be a great addition to Rowett's attacking options and give them pace and unpredictability, which they sometimes lack.

You can't fault his enthusiasm to get started and prove that he is a player with a Chelsea future.
