Brentford didn't start their final season at Griffin Park how they would've hoped.

In fact, Brentford's season as a whole didn't get off to a great start. They won just one of their opening five and after the first couple months of the season, looked to be heading towards an underwhelming, and ultimately disappointing mid-table finish.

The story has since changed and Brentford were at one point looking to break into the top-two. Thomas Frank kept the faith in his players and vice-versa, and they soon became the Brentford side that fans were expecting them to be.

It was Birmingham City who travelled to Griffin Park on the opening day of the season. Pep Clotet's side weren't sure how their season would pan out, but after claiming a 1-0 win, they looked to be dark horses.

Brentford fans after that game were in a strange sense of sly optimism - they didn't hold the players accountable for the loss, but instead the management for their slow moving transfer activity:

The club spent nearly £30 million on assembling a play-off side, largely funded by the sales of Neal Maupay and Ezri Konsa, but that final squad wasn't fully assembled in time for the season opener.

Bryan Mbeumo would arrive two days after Brentford's opening day loss to Birmingham, whilst most newcomers arrived in pre-season. But it was such a vast overhaul that it was bound to take some time for this new-look side to hit top gear.

They showed potential, and showed a distinctly new style of play under Frank. But ultimately on the day, they couldn't find a way through:

That's been the story of Brentford's season on occasion - having all the ball and no end product - but the levels that they've progressed in the last six months has been an undeniable achievement for the club.

They currently sit in 4th-place of the table, with ten points separating them from 2nd-place West Brom. Automatic promotion then looks out of the picture for Frank and his Bees side, but promotion is still well on the cards.

If and when the season resumes, Brentford will be coming off the back of an emphatic 5-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, and next face a lowly Wigan Athletic.
