New Middlesbrough signing issues early verdict after penning deal

Aaron Connolly didn’t need much to be persuaded to join Middlesbrough, despite links elsewhere.

The Irish forward has spoken for the first time, following his move to Chris Wilder’s side. The 21-year old admitted he was excited to be with the club and is looking forward to working his way into the team.

“I didn’t need much persuasion to come here because it’s a massive club,” said Connolly, via Gazette Live

“I spoke to the gaffer on Christmas Eve, we had a really good chat, and I didn’t need to look elsewhere. I knew after that call it was the right place to come.

“I’m excited to be here. It’s a massive club. I’m excited to be playing football again and hoping to get them back to where they need to be.

“There seems to be a good feeling about the place. It’s nice to come into a place where they’re winning and having a good run. Hopefully, I can get in the team, which will be tough. If I do, hopefully I can help the momentum.”

Connolly struggled for first-team minutes with Brighton this season, so this loan opportunity gives him the chance to get back to starting football games again.

However, given Middlesbrough’s form, it won’t be a given that he jumps straight into the starting XI.

Middlesbrough are currently seventh in the Championship, one point behind the playoff places. Huddersfield Town, in sixth, have also played a game more than Boro.

Wilder’s side are on a three-game winning streak and are unbeaten in their last six league matches.

Their next opponent is Mansfield Town, as they meet in the FA Cup Third Round on January 8.

The Verdict

Connolly is saying all the right things for an introductory press conference. He complimented his new teammates, his new manager and was bigging up the size of the club.

Connolly was also very aware to suggest he won’t walk straight into the team. This is the kind of attitude he needs going forward.

While Middlesbrough are currently a step down from Brighton, a good showing over the next six months could get him back into contention with a Premier League side.
