New Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate is moving swiftly to stamp his own mark on his squad, with goalkeeper Tomas Mejias returning for a second spell with Boro, a year after leaving to play in Cyprus where he made 28 appearances for Omonia Nicosia, it has been confirmed on the club website.

The Spaniard made 17 appearances in his first spell for Boro, between 2014 and 2018 and has agreed a two-year deal on his return to Teesside.

So is Mejias a good signing for Boro?

We discuss...

George Dagless

"It makes sense.

"Woodgate clearly felt as though Boro should have kept him and so he has acted quickly to get him back into the club this summer.

"Darren Randolph had an excellent season last year and will be tough to oust because of that but the sign of a good side is one that does not rest.

"Randolph will once again have to prove himself with the return of Mejias and I expect both to push one another to new heights next season.

"I like the early stages of Woodgate's managerial career so far."

George Brooks

"I think this is a good signing for Middlesbrough, especially on a free transfer.

"Mejias is a talented goalkeeper and he's got a decent amount of experience.

"Even though he's likely to be the back-up goalkeeper to Darren Randolph at the Riverside next season, he will still be a useful player for Woodgate to have in his squad and a good option to call upon from the bench if needed.

"He showed throughout his first spell at Middlesbrough that he has potential and he could turn out to be a smart signing on a free transfer."

Jacob Potter

"I think this is a smart bit of business by Woodgate’s side.

"I was surprised to see the club allow him to leave in his previous spell at the Riverside, and I think he’ll come back with a point to prove.

"He’s an excellent option to have available to challenge Darren Randolph for a starting spot in Woodgate’s squad.

"But with rumours circulating that Randolph could leave Boro before the new season gets underway, then Mejias would be a strong enough option to rely on for Middlesbrough as they look to finish inside the top six next season.

"He’s got experience of playing in the Championship, and I think he could do really well, providing that he is given regular game time by Woodgate."
