New Nottingham Forest assistant manager Juan Jose Vila has outlined what the new management team want to achieve at the City Ground and admitted promotion is the aim.

The Spaniard occupied the same role at Middlesbrough alongside Aitor Karanka where the pair enjoyed a lot of success and ultimately achieved their goal of taking the Teesside club back to the top flight.

And, speaking to the Nottingham Post, Vila acknowledged they have the same aim in Nottingham, although stressed it’s also about building for the long term.

We are going to try the challenge of approaching promotion, but above all we have to lay the foundations of a project that should bring something beautiful in the future.”

The coach, who has had spells at Deportivo, Valencia and Spartak Moscow among other clubs, recognised that fans will need to be patient and understand it might not happen this season.

Right now we are eleven points away from the play-off places. We will try, but it will not be easy. But hey, the important thing in these first months will be to lay the foundations. We have a way of working and players also have to adapt.”

The Verdict

Forest fans will like what their new assistant manager has to say as it shows the ambition the new setup have.

Realistically, they can’t be many, if any, Forest fans that expect the play-offs this season so as Vila says it’s about building for next season so they can sustain a serious challenge.

Vila and Karanka have proven their credentials in this league before and Forest followers have every right to be optimistic about what the future holds.
