Whoever takes charge of Sunderland will know they have a massive job on their hands as they look to guide the club back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

Despite the embarrassment of back-to-back relegations, there is at least some optimism around the Stadium of Light now that previous owner Ellis Short looks set to depart.

Once the takeover, led by Stewart Donald, is complete, they will be immediately tasked with appointing a new manager who will have to oversee major changes at the Wearside club.

Given the financial implications of another relegation, a lot of the first-team squad will be up for sale and that will see a lot of new players take their place.

Here we look at three new signings that could arrive in the coming weeks...

Reports have linked the Black Cats with the stopper who is the younger brother of Aston Villa's Sam and is set to be released from Manchester United this summer.

Sunderland's problems in goal have been well-documented and they need to prioritise the signing of a quality number one this summer - and Johnstone could be the answer.

The Shrewsbury player has been a star in League One this year with his impressive displays and goals from midfield.

That will make it tough for Sunderland to keep the player in the third tier but they are a big club and have had a long-term interest in the player.

He's exactly the type they need to look to bring in for the new campaign.

Whilst signing young, hungry and determined players is the way to go, a few experienced professionals also need to join the group.

And, one man who would be an excellent capture is Ross Wallace.

He knows the club from his time here before and importantly still has the quality to contribute in League One.
