New Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson is relishing the chance to make a fresh start following his move from Wigan Athletic, and will try and use his experience to help the club reach the Premier League.

The former West Bromwich Albion star agreed to make the switch to the Midlands on Friday evening, ending a two-year stay at Wigan where he made over 50 appearances.

Speaking to Derby's official website following the move, Carson explained that he couldn't wait to get started and compete for the number one shirt with Lee Grant.

“It’s a fresh start for me and Derby County with a new head coach coming in," the four-time England international said.

“It’s a clean slate for everyone and an opportunity for every player to show that they are worthy of a place in the team.

“Competition for places is going to be strong throughout the squad and that’s what you need, regardless of whether you’re in the Championship or the Premier League.

“I think it can be only a good thing and a positive headache for the Head Coach as well.

“I don’t want to be in my comfort zone, I want to be battling and fighting for a place.”

Carson was a key member of the West Brom side that finished second in the Championship in 2010, and believes that his experience of promotion and the Premier League can help Derby to achieve a return to the top flight.

“I’m well aware that Derby have been pushing for promotion in the last few years in what is a very, very tough Championship," he said.

“Some people can think that a certain team is certain to go up but I don’t think people realise how tough the league is.

“I’ve played in this league at a few clubs and been promoted with West Bromwich Albion as well, so I know what it takes to get out the league.

“It would be nice to do it at Derby too and I don’t think it matters how we do it, as long as we get there.”

“I hope I can use my experience to benefit the team.”
