‘Never say never’ – Ex-Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock teases return to management

Ex-Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has refused to rule out a return to football management.

The 71-year-old capped a 39 year stint in management in South Wales last year. His career on the sidelines had taken him from the likes of Gainsborough Trinity, to Scarborough, all the way up and through the Football League, and into the top-flight.

But the Sheffield-born Warnock never quite had a team quite worthy of making real headway in the Premier League, and he spent most of managerial career in the Championship.

He made quite the name for himself in the second-tier though, winning promotion into the Premier League with all of Sheffield United, QPR and Cardiff City, to add to the eight career promotions he achieved.

Speaking to The Athletic, Warnock explained how age shouldn’t be a barrier to starting a new chapter in the game, and outlined the key behind his potential return:

Did Cardiff score higher or lower than 36 points in the Premier League last season?

“Never say never,” he said when asked whether he’d be back in the dugouts one day.

“Age should not be the deciding factor. Roy Hodgson is older than me, for a start.

“The big thing is whether you still have the drive. And if the right job comes along. I still love the game as much as ever. There really is nothing like that moment when the final whistle blows and you have won a match. Or just clinched promotion.”

Since his Cardiff exit, Warnock’s name was banded around a couple of job openings – Ipswich Town were linked with the appointment only last month, after Paul Lambert’s drop in form at Portman Road.

The verdict

Warnock is a true great of football, and every fan has some memories of him. He wasn’t the most popular character in football by a long chalk but a character nonetheless, and a person who most every Championship fan will say they miss.

Plenty of jobs spring up throughout the season and pre-season, and it could be just a matter of time before we see Warnock on our TVs again.
