Andy Lonergan is a man whose career appeared to be fizzling out at this point last season having just been released by Middlesbrough.

At the age of 35, he had just spent the second half of the 2018/19 season on loan with Rochdale in League One and any hopes of ever playing in the Premier League looked to be vanishing quickly.

However, after Liverpool made the bizarre decision to bring him in on a free transfer in the summer, presumably to boost their number of homegrown players, that ambition started to look more realistic.

And, following a freakish spell for the Reds that has seen both Allison and Adrian pick-up injuries, it now looks like Lonergan could be called upon to face Southampton this weekend.

One club whom Lonergan spent two years of his career, over two different spells, is Leeds United.
