Sunderland CEO Jim Rodwell has thrown his support behind Project Big Picture as they look for immediate funding to help the club.
The proposal, which has been put forward by Manchester United and Liverpool, plans to offer an instant rescue package for those struggling in the Football League.
However, one significant potential negative is that the Premier League will be reduced to 18 teams and the power when it comes to making decisions will lie with nine clubs, which includes the ‘Big Six’.
That has understandably caused concern that they are trying to make the league a closed shop and it will lower the competition.
Yet, Rodwell claimed to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie that the proposal ‘doesn’t hurt anyone’ and clearly feels the positives outweigh the negatives – like many in the EFL it should be said.
Such a view wasn’t shared by the fans though and here we look at some of their reaction from Twitter…
Jim – the SAFC of 5 year ago WERE in the EPL. Never been more ashamed to be a Sunderland fan and we've had enough reasons to be ashamed. This is simply astonishing mentality. We are being run into the ground by people claiming to be saving us.

No fan wants this, yet the efl are bending over backwards to Parry and his power grab . I'm ashamed of Sunderland football club today

Lower league clubs like Sunderland will get a desperately needed cash boost so I'd expect them to go for it. Long term, bigger picture it'll be disastrous for English football though.

Why can’t the help proposed for lower league teams be implemented without the need for the self appointed ‘big six’ basically running the game?

YES to the PL helping the EFL. NO to the biggest clubs using it as an excuse to leverage power for themselves.

Every single SAFC fan I’ve talked too think it’s an awful idea

Pathetic, why don’t you just roll over and let the top 6 do whatever they want. Short term gain to risk long term future of football!
