Neil Warnock has responded defiantly to criticism that his Cardiff side are among the least attractive teams to watch in the division.

The experienced manager, who will step aside at the end of the season, has built a reputation on winning rather than entertaining, and that won't have bothered Bluebirds fans one bit when they were promoted in 2018.

However, he believes there is more to his side than that, and thinks that the players in the squad make them one of the most exciting teams in the division.

Speaking in the Reading pre-match press conference, Warnock said: "I think people get carried away, really. I think we attack as much as we can and it’s entertaining, what we do.

"If you class keeping the ball in your own half as football, no it’s not my game. But I don’t see the point in doing that for the sake of it.

"We’ve got some good players in midfield, the full-backs, Joe (Bennett) in particular loves going forward, the wingers are as exciting as anyone in the league and now we have a strike force like that. I think we play a little bit more football than people give us credit for."

Only Luton have been involved in more goals; for or against, in the division this season, which suggests that whilst Warnock hasn't got the defence quite right yet, they are more than entertaining in attack - and Isaac Vassell's last-minute winner against Luton last weekend was certainly exciting.

Also, Cardiff were the 6th highest scorers in the division when they gained promotion 2018, despite the belief that their promotion campaign was based on being organised and difficult to beat.

Warnock will only care about the win in the clash with Reading, but if he can silence a few critics in the process he will be more than happy to do so.

The Verdict

It is unfair to suggest that Warnock's team plays boring football or that he is limited to long ball just because he doesn't prefer a possession style which so many managers operate with now.

He has always been a practical manager and knows the most effective methods to get the best out of the players he has at his disposal, so shouldn't be criticised for that.

There are goals throughout this Cardiff team and players who are willing to get forward, which should be evidenced against Reading on Saturday.
