Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock is angry with Iceland for calling up Aron Gunnarsson to their squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The 28-year old midfielder missed Tuesday's win over Leeds and was already ruled out of tomorrow's clash with Derby because of a tear in his thigh.

However, Iceland have still called up their captain, much to the annoyance of Warnock.

He has a tear between his hip and thigh which you can see on the scan we have. It's getting better but to play two top games like that when he's not fit to play for us on Saturday, well I don't think he should be travelling,” Warnock told Wales Online.

The ex-Sheffield United boss also demanded Iceland agree to cover his wages should he aggravate his injury.

We'll make sure we send all the medical evidence over, and if they play him we want a written agreement that if they see the scans it's got to be their responsibility to pay his wages. I don't see why we should if they gamble on him.”

It's a tricky situation for the player too, with Cardiff flying high in the league and his country desperate to play in the World Cup.

The Verdict

Warnock's anger is understandable as Cardiff are going for promotion and should anything happen to Gunnarsson it would seriously hinder their chances.

Equally so, these two games are pivotal for Iceland as they look to get to Russia 2018, so you can understand both sides.

Ultimately though, he's been called up by Iceland and if the medical staff deem him fit enough to play then the manager is going to play his captain. Warnock will ave his fingers crossed that he comes through unscathed if that's the case though.
