Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock says the he is hopeful of signing his number one target for the club this month, and is just waiting on the approval of the player’s manager to complete the deal.
It has been a quiet transfer window so far for ‘Boro, with goalkeeper Jordan Archer the only player to join the club, arriving on a deal until the end of the season.
However, it now seems as though Warnock is optimistic of bringing in at least one more player, and it appears this is a deal the ‘Boro manager would be rather pleased with.
Providing an update on the club’s transfer situation, Warnock was quoted by Teesside Live as saying: “I’m still optimistic about my number one target, but that looks like going down to the wire.
“We’ve agreed everything with the player and the club, it’s just a matter of the manager agreeing to let the player go.
“You can’t really do anything until that happens, and you can’t really blame managers for looking after their own club.
“I’m still optimistic that one will happen as long as the club involved doesn’t get any more injuries or things like that.”
It seems however, as though that may not be the only deal Warnock looks to do before the window closes, as he went on to reveal: “I might just have a little gamble on something else as well. We’ve just got to get somebody wide who is direct and can take people on.
“But beyond that, I might well have a gamble on another one. There’s a couple of players that I think, ‘Well, I might have a gamble on somebody like that’, just to help us to the end of the season.”
As things stand, Middlesbrough are currently eighth in the Championship table, five points off the play-off places, going into their clash with Nottingham Forest at The City Ground on Wednesday night.
This does look to be really encouraging from a Middlesbrough perspective.
Right now, the club do look in a strong position to mount a push for the play-off places at the very least this season, which could give them a chance of a return to the Premier League.
As a result, you feel they have to get their business right during the current transfer window, to ensure their squad is as strong as it can be in order for them to do that.
The fact therefore that Warnock seems confident about getting his top target suggests they are one their way to doing that, and it will be interesting to see exactly who they bring in between now and the close of the market.
