Neil Warnock makes West Ham reference as he buzzes over imminent Middlesbrough transfer agreement

Middlesbrough boss, Neil Warnock, is hoping that Yannick Bolasie can provide an impact like Michail Antonio does for West Ham, with the forward set to arrive at the Riverside Stadium from Everton imminently.

Warnock has been working hard to get deals over the line for Boro over the course of the January transfer window, and with days until the deadline, it appears that Bolasie is not far away from signing.

It’s been confirmed that Bolasie is on his way to the Riverside, with Warnock revealing exactly what he hopes his new signing brings.

He referenced the outlet that Antonio provides West Ham in attack, with it Warnock’s belief that Bolasie can do the same for his side.

As per Teesside Live, Warnock said: “I think he can be like an [Michail] Antonio for us as well. Upfront like Antonio does at West Ham, I think he’s got that in his locker. He’d be quite capable of doing that.

“He hasn’t got a clue what he’s doing or what he’s going to do, and Antonio is the same. If they don’t know what they’re going to do, how can a defender? They’re effective.”

Assombalonga? Saville? – Can you name which Middlesbrough player scored each these 15 goals this season?

Who scored Middlesbrough's first goal of the season against Shrewsbury in the Carabao Cup?

Bolasie is 31 now and hasn’t featured in a fixture throughout 2020/21.

He was involved for Sporting in the Portuguese top-flight last season, but his last appearances in English football came back in January 2019 whilst Bolasie was on loan with Aston Villa.

Dean Smith’s side lost the winger’s service at the midpoint of that season as he moved to Anderlecht.

Now, Bolasie is set to return to the Championship and feature for Boro against Norwich City at the weekend.

The Verdict

What you get from Bolasie is a sense of unpredictability.

Warnock will like that as it offers his side something a little bit different for the second-half of the season.

If he plays on the wing, Warnock won’t be asking much of him defensively. Instead, it will all be about Bolasie providing an outlet and giving the opposition something to think about.

Boro have done well this season, but they have been missing a player of this ilk.

It looks a really good deal.
