Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has admitted that he partly blames himself for latest injury to have hit striker Isaac Vassell.

It was confirmed on Thursday that Vassell is set to miss two months after tearing his quad, and Warnock has now revealed that the striker picked up the problem in an Under 23s game against Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the week, after the manager forgot to issue instructions as to the striker's playing time.

Explaining the situation around Vassell's injury, Warnock revealed that the 26-year-old picked up the injury in the 83rd minute of the game, despite the striker only having been meant to play 60 minutes of the match.

Speaking about Vassell's injury to Wales Online, Warnock revealed: "He did well at Sheffield Wednesday. He was on fire. And it’s one of those things.

"As a manager, you do regret certain things. I remember picking the phone up to tell Ronnie Jepson to just give him an hour and he did it (the injury) in the 83rd minute. But I forgot to ring him (Jepson), so you blame yourself at times."

Despite that, Warnock was philosophical about Vassell's injury, as he continued: "But these things happen, you can’t do anything about it and he will work hard and bounce back."

Vassell has so far made just two appearances in the Championship for the Bluebirds since signing from Birmingham in the summer, scoring a last-minute winner in their 2-1 win over Luton in the second week of the season.

Cardiff go into their trip to Hull on Saturday 13th in the Championship table, with three wins and three draws from their opening eight games of the league season.

The Verdict

This is going to be hugely frustrating for Cardiff.

From the looks of things, Vassell's injury had the potential to have been avoided rather easily, and that is something that will surely be hard for the striker to take as well.

One thing the striker can at least take from this is that Warnock does seem to be backing him to bounce back from this injury, and that should at least give him the confidence that he will have a part to play upon his return to fitness.

Even so, this does seem to leave Cardiff somewhat short on numbers in attack for the time being, and that may be a concern for their hopes of challenging further up the table this season.
