Cardiff City moved into the automatic promotion places with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Barnsley last night but Neil Warnock has said he could quit the club if they achieve their aim of promotion.
The 67-year old has worked wonders during his time in the Welsh capital and they look set to mount a serious promotion charge this season. However, speaking to TalkSPORT, Warnock revealed the managing in the top flight doesn't really appeal to him now.
“I didn't enjoy the Premier League, if I'm honest. It's not my cup of tea. This is my cup of tea – lads that go through brick walls for you at places like this (Barnsley) on a Tuesday night. It's amazing what you can do with team spirit. That's my forte.”
When asked specifically if he would stay on should the Bluebirds win promotion, he replied; “I wouldn't say that at the moment. Let's get there first. It's going to be so difficult with the wage bill we have in comparison with some of these others.”
“As I said, I don't enjoy it. I don't like the chairmen talking to players and going out with them.”
The Verdict
You can understand what Warnock is saying but I think every football fan would take this with a pinch of salt. Guiding Cardiff to the Premier League would be a phenomenal achievement and I'd be very surprised if he missed out on his chance back at the top.
More likely it's a subtle reminder to the chairman that should Cardiff ever go up Warnock will be expecting complete control of the club – as he would deserve.
However, as he says, they're not promoted yet, but if they carry on grinding out vital wins like they did last night, Warnock could be left with a big decision to make in May!
