Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has taken a dig at Nottingham Forest for the size of their squad, amid the EFL's new rules regarding substitutes this week.

Championship sides will be able to make five substitutes from Friday night, with teams able to include nine players on the bench.

This could be useful for the likes of Forest, who have a rather large group of players to choose from on a weekly basis.

Forest added 14 new players to their squad over the summer, and with over 30 first-teamers on the books, a few will have been left out of Chris Hughton's 25-man squad.

It was a quiet summer for Boro, though, with only six new players joining the club. Neil Warnock only managed to name six players on the bench against Brentford last time out.

Speaking live on talkSPORT, Warnock revealed his frustrations at the EFL's new rule, aiming digs at Forest for the huge squad they have on Trentside.

He said: "You talk about your nine subs but we didn’t vote for that, because we only had six on the bench last week.

"It’s only (beneficial) for your big clubs like Norwich or Forest who have got 30-odd players. It’s only going to help them, it’s not going to help clubs like ourselves.

"I’m only going to put three on anyhow and sometimes I only put three on. We’ve got nine games coming up in 26 days or so and it’s going to be a big test.

"We’ve got to be very lucky over the next few months that we don’t get two or three injuries."

The Verdict

You can see why Warnock is a bit annoyed.

It's perhaps a bit wrong to change rules with the season already well underway, but with such a hectic schedule this season, players need rest.

Warnock doesn't have a lot of players to choose from this season and their squad is thin, but it hasn't mattered too much as they have made a great start to this season.

With eight games to be played in December, though, their squad depth could become a lot thinner.
