Former Bradford City player Neil Redfearn has heaped praise on Stuart McCall as he takes charge of the club, following the departure of Gary Bowyer.

Bradford’s form has taken a massive dip in recent months and has seen them slip away from the automatic promotion places and even out of the play-off places. A winless run of seven games was capped off with a poor 3-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic, which ultimately cost Gary Bowyer his job at the Utilita Energy Stadium, after a mere nine months in charge.

On Tuesday, Stuart McCall was revealed as the club’s new manager, coming in for his third spell at the club, having previously managed on a permanent basis from 2007-2010 and 2016-2018.

Following the appointment, spirits have been lifted surrounding the Bantams, with fans lauding the appointment and many other believing it could help boost their promotion prospects massively in the back end of the season.

One of those was former City player Neil Redfearn, who moved to express his delight at McCall getting the job at Bradford, claiming he never should have gone in the first place:

McCall’s first job in charge of the Bantams is to halt their winless run when they host Grimsby at the weekend.

The verdict

It’s positive to see such overwhelming support for McCall so early in his time at the club, despite being there two other times before as permanent boss.

Redfearn is no stranger himself to multiple stints at a club as manager, as he constantly stepped in at Elland Road as interim Leeds United manager, before getting the job on a permanent basis.

It’s not been a great few months for Bradford and it comes as no surprise to see that Bowyer was sacked on Monday, and they need results to turn around soon.

They have the quality the get promoted back to League One this season and the change of management could spark them into life.
