Neil Redfearn believes that his former club Leeds have been handed an unfair disadvantage in the race for Championship promotion, because they are often playing after rivals Sheffield United.

Marcelo Bielsa's side currently lead The Blades by three points in the race for the second automatic promotion spot with four games remaining, and the two sides are not scheduled to play simultaneously again until the final day of the season, with each side moved twice for coverage on Sky Sports in that period .

On each of the three matchdays between now and the final day of the season, it is Sheffield United who play before the Elland Road club, and that is something that Redfearn believes is a disadvantage for Bielsa's side, as he told BBC Radio Leeds: "I don't think it's fair, if I'm honest. Particularly for sides going for the same prize and it being such a big prize and what it means."

Redfearn, who managed Leeds over three spells as a caretaker manager between 2012 and 2014 before taking the job on a permanent basis between November 2014 and May 2015, explained the reasoning behind his thoughts by adding: "Both sides should kick off at the same time. It is an advantage as if Sheffield United get a result it puts pressure on Leeds."

The Verdict

Given what is at stake, you can understand why Sky are so keen to showcase the two clubs between now and the end of the season.

Playing after Sheffield United on each of the three occasions between now and the end of the season does however mean Leeds are going into every game facing an uphill battle should The Blades win their earlier games.

You feel if Sky were adamant on showing these games, it would have been much fairer to alternate between the pair as to who plays first and who plays second.
