Neil McDonald is being realistic with the club's expectations

Blackpool were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship last season, and finished with 26 points throughout the season, and It means they're the joint worst team in Championship history, with Stockport Town.

The Tangerines have been a laughing stock since last summer, where after releasing the majority of there squad, they had eight first team players with a week before the season started.

They're on there third manager in a year, appointing former West Ham coach Neil McDonald last week as Lee Clark left the club, deciding he wasn't the right man to move the club forward.

McDonald has firmly lowered expectations for next season by telling the Blackpool Gazette: “No-one here wants to be in League One but that’s our reality.

“You always want to say you’d love to go for promotion but the reality is that there are stepping stones to get to that.

“The stepping stones for us are to recruit as many quality players as possible and see how the season starts.

We want to get off to a good start and hit the ground running. If we do that, we’ll set a new target and proceed from there.

“But mainly it’s about recruiting the players to make sure we are competitive in this league, and winning more games than we are losing.

“Very rarely do you get a job at a club that’s on the up, and you have to change everyone’s work ethic and way of thinking.”

“And if we can progress further up the league or into a good position because of the good recruitment, that’s brilliant.”

The Tangerines are facing the same problem as last year as they announced their retained list a few weeks ago. They only have nine contracted players, after releasing 17 players from the club.
