As we approach the beginning of the new Championship season, Neil Harris, like all managers, will be starting to get a rough idea of his starting eleven for the opening day of the season.

However, while the Millwall team largely picks itself outfield, the goalkeeping spot is still well up for grabs.

After their eighth place finish last season, the simple answer to this dilemma would be to continue with Jordan Archer, the number one choice last campaign, as the Lions only conceded 45 goals in the league with the 25-year-old between the sticks.

But, with the recent loan signing of Ben Amos from Bolton Wanderers, it puts an air of doubt over Archer’s starting place.

Amos, who spent last season on loan at League One side Charlton Athletic, made half a century of appearances for the Addicks last season, and helped them to a sixth place finish.

The 28-year-old spent his youth career at Manchester United, and has made one first team appearance for the Premier League giants, which came in the League Cup in 2008.

Since then, Amos has played for eight more teams, largely on loan, and will find himself vying for the number one spot this coming season.

While some say it is always good to have strong competition for places, one of these two will have to play second fiddle, which no goalkeeper wants.

While last season’s number two, David Martin, is likely to fall even further down the pecking order.

Neil Harris will be leaving it to Archer and Amos to fight it out for the top spot between the sticks, but come the opening game of the season, only one of them can be number one.
