Neil Harris has backed centre-forward Robert Glatzel to improve after his difficult start to life at Cardiff City.

The German striker has managed just four Championship goals in 21 league appearances so far this season and has come into criticism from some Cardiff fans.

However, Harris appears to give the summer arrival a chance, with the 26-year-old impressing during a two-year spell with FC Heidenheim in the second division of German football.

Despite making just two starts during the whole of February, Harris said Glatzel could be a very good goalscorer.

"Ultimately Robert Glatzel is an excellent finisher. A very, very good goalscorer," Harris said (via Wales Online).

"We have to share the goals around the team of course, but if we can get one of our players to step up then that would be fantastic for us."

He added: "He's extremely professional and he works extremely hard. He's moved the family to Wales to be successful and he wants to be successful.

"I think there is an understanding from the fans that there is patience needed with foreign players who come over. Sometimes it does take that first season to really find your feet."

Cardiff have managed 50 goals in 36 Championship matches so far this season, although top scorer Lee Tomlin has been ruled out for at least another six weeks through injury.

In his absence, it is hoped Glatzel can play a more important role but the German was an unused substitute in Cardiff's 2-2 draw with Brentford on Saturday.

The verdict

Glatzel has not had the start to life at Cardiff that he might have hoped and has seen himself fall below Callum Paterson in the pecking order.

With Harris tending to favour a 4-3-3 formation, the onus is therefore on Glatzel to displace the Scot from the starting lineup, who has not scored in any of his last four Championship fixtures.

Cardiff have a series of vitally important games coming up as they look to seek a spot in the playoffs and with matches coming thick and fast, this could be his opportunity to prove his worth.
