Charlton Athletic’s 2020/21 FA Cup campaign came to an end at the first round stage on Saturday, as they were beaten 1-0 by their League One rivals Plymouth Argyle at The Valley.
Luke Jephcott’s strike on the hour mark was enough to secure passage into the second round of the competition for the Pilgrims, while also ending Charlton’s eight match unbeaten run in all competitions.
This however, was not the worst result for the Addicks, since it now allows them to focus on the league, while the game also represented the chance for them to give some other players an opportunity in the starting lineup.
One such player was Marcus Maddison, with the summer signing handed his first start for the club as he looks to build up his match fitness.
The attacker would end up playing the first 65 minutes of the game before being substituted, and given the excitement and expectation that greeted his arrival, plenty of Charlton fans were keen to give take on Maddison following his first real run out for Lee Bowyer’s side.
Here, we take a look at what some of them had to say about the 27-year-old’s performance.
Maddison tried to be all Hollywood.. Not really looking a team player at the moment but I’m sure that the LB/JJ combo will get him playing the #cafc way soon

Maddison needs get fit and work harder, this is the biggest club he’s been at, and in Bowyer the best manager. This is his big chance to shine, get your head sorted Marcus and become a fans favourite #cafc

Vennings, Morgan and Barker did well, good hour for Maddison …bright parts of a bad result #cafc

Barker was solid and our best player today IMO
Vennings looked very good when on
Maddison has something about him
Levitt shouldn’t be in that holding role & not impressed by him
Purrington no comment
Chuks looked frustrated from the get go
Albie could be quality#cafc

They played their full strength team and it showed some of our players lacked mins, plenty of positives though. Maddison when match fit will be class, vennings and barker are unreal prospects and matthews getting more mins in the tank. No injuries good fitness = success #cafc

What a dreadful performance, hardly any shots, vennings was a bright spark but that was it! You can see a lot of the players like maddison etc were rusty but good for them to get the minutes much needed #cafc

Is Bowyer playing FIFA and put the “shoot on sight” instruction on Maddison?😭😭😭 Seems like he is just shooting from anywhere when he picks up the ball. #cafc
