Sunderland have appointed Jim Rodwell as their new CEO, which has drawn an interesting reaction from fans of the North West club.

Rodwell has left Scunthorpe United, where he has spent five years as CEO, to make the switch to the Stadium of Light.

The 49-year-old has significant experience in the game, having been a player, a chairman, and a board director at the FA and EFL.

The news was announced earlier today, with Sunderland noting that Rodwell's appointment is integral to ensuring they're in the best possible position to ensure ongoing and long-term success.

In the announcement, it was reiterated that the North East club remains for sale but that there is increased uncertainty given the current global situation.

Rodwell revealed he was "honoured and delighted to be joining a club of the stature and pedigree of Sunderland".

He added: "I'll be counting down the days until I can get started at the stadium and academy to do all I can to drive this great club forward."

The incoming CEO is somewhat unfortunate given that he shares a surname with Jack Rodwell, one of the Black Cats' biggest flops in recent years.

The midfielder spent four years at the club on a reported wage of £70,000 per week but made just 76 appearances for the club.
