Former Brentford striker Neal Maupay has described his ex-teammate Said Benrahma as the best player in the Championship following the Bees' 7-0 victory over Luton on the weekend.

Benrahma scored a second-half penalty during his side's emphatic victory against the Hatters, with midfielder Josh Dasilva also netting a hat-trick for the Bees while Ollie Watkins, Bryan Mbeumo and Mathias Jensen were on the scoresheet too.

Brentford moved up to seventh in the Championship following their six victory in eight matches, and Benrahma's overall performance has been key to this positive run, with the attacking midfielder scoring his third goal of the campaign against Luton.

Maupay, who left Brentford to join Brighton in the summer, responded to one of the Bees' Instagram posts by labelling Benrahma as the Championship's best player following his role in the 7-0 success.

Benrahma has now scored 14 goals and registered 21 assists in his 61 appearances for Brentford, and he struck up an impressive partnership with Maupay during his time at the club, with the striker scoring 41 goals for the Bees before his top-flight move.

The Verdict

Brentford are on an excellent run of form at the moment and Benrahma's creative presence has been essential to this, with the midfielder starting seven of the Bees' last eight matches during their strong run of results.

There can be no doubt that the 24-year-old will continue to be a vital presence if the West London outfit challenge for promotion this season, and his consistency must make him one of the most feared attacking midfielders in the league.

There would have been concerns that Brentford would miss the partnership between Benrahma and Maupay this season, but the goalscoring form of Ollie Watkins has comfortably filled the void left by the Frenchman.
