Notts County manager Neal Ardley has insisted that he would like to stay at the club beyond this season, regardless of which division the Magpies find themselves in next season.

The Magpies' place in the Football League is hanging by a thread, ahead of a trip to Swindon Town this weekend - arguably one of the biggest games in the club's 157-year history.

A point for Macclesfield Town at home to Cambridge United will all but condemn Notts to relegation to the National League, unless they manage to miraculously turn around an eight-goal swing.

It has been a turbulent season for the club both on and off the pitch, with a South African consortium believed to be interested in taking over the club, after Alan Hardy put them up for sale in January.

Neal Ardley's future at Meadow Lane is also in doubt - the former AFC Wimbledon manager has been unable to steer the Magpies away from the relegation zone, winning just six out of 28 games in charge of the club.

Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham ahead of his side's trip to Wiltshire this weekend, Ardley insisted that he would like to stay at the club beyond this season, regardless of whether they find themselves in the National League or not.

He said: "I want to be a part of this club, for sure. Obviously, from my own point of view, Saturday is my first goal to get over, then after that, there's new owners potentially coming in.

"They might not want me, they might not have a plan in action that means I can take the club forward, no-one really knows, and I think it will probably take two or three weeks after the season for it to be known."

Notts fans will be praying for a miracle this weekend, as the club look to avoid the drop and cling onto their prestigious status of being the World's Oldest Football League club.

The Verdict

I think Notts fans are likely to split on whether they would keep Ardley or not.

It was always going to be tough for him to make an impact at Meadow Lane - he has had to work with two different groups of players, and he's also had to try to steady what is a sinking ship.

His additions in January have been hit and miss, and he will be looking to prove his doubters wrong next season, with Notts looking increasingly likely to drop out of the EFL this term.
