Luton Town manager Nathan Jones has revealed that midfielder Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu could be set to miss the Hatters’ next two Championship games through injury.

It has been a very difficult start to the campaign for Luton on the injury front and over the last few weeks that has started to impact their form in the Championship.

The Hatters’ 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday means they have failed to win any of their last six matches in the league.

Mpanzu was the latest notable absentee from the side for their trip to Bournemouth at the weekend, with the midfielder missing out on a game for the first time in the Championship this term.

With two important games coming up ahead of the international break against Coventry City on Wednesday and Huddersfield Town next weekend, the Terriers would not have been wanting to lose the midfielder.

Speaking to Luton Today, Jones revealed that Mpanzu’s injury is not something that should be overly serious in terms of the long-term. However, he did suggest that he could be set to miss the next two fixtures before the international break.

He said: “Not really, he could miss the next two games and then it’s the international break.

“I literally can’t pick up my phone, if we could just go to sleep and go game-to-game, we’d be in a better position, but there’s things that are happening to us.

“We’re missing so many in terms of real energy, in terms of Fred (Onyedinma), in terms of (Admiral) Muskwe, we keep saying it I know, Allan Campbell, Pelly-Ruddock.

“We’ve got to get through this period, but I said that to the last international break, get through and then we picked up five new injuries and totally knocked back.”

The verdict

You have to feel for Jones and Luton at the moment, they are not being helped by continuously losing vital members of their side through injury.

Most sides in the Championship would see their form suffer like Luton’s has over the last few weeks if they were enduring as many injury issues as Luton have been contending with.

Mpanzu is a key cog in Luton’s midfield and he brings a lot of vital qualities to the side that they lack in the middle of the park in his absence. He will therefore be a real miss for the Hatters in the next two games, but it could provide a chance for others to stake a claim for more involvement.

Jones is right that Luton just have to get through to the international break and then put all of their focus onto getting as many players back fit as possible.
