Nathan Jones has shared his thoughts on the closing of the transfer window, and the problem of the Championship's early deadline.

Clubs in League One and Two, as well as those abroad, are still allowed to operate in the transfer market until the end of August, and the Stoke boss is puzzled by such a system.

Stoke have added 10 players to the squad so far this season, but several players have received interest this summer, such as Jack Butland and Giannelli Imbula, and there may be a worry that a potential approach from a European club could turn their heads.

Speaking in the Derby pre-match press conference, Jones said: "I have stated before that the European window closing after our window isn't right. I feel it gives them an advantage over us and it can definitely sway people."

Butland has wanted a move away all summer and according to the Daily Mail he is willing to move abroad, which he wouldn't be able to do if the window closed at the same time for all clubs in Europe.

That is likely Jones' concern, as even if the England keeper doesn't leave he could still be unsettled further, and since he has already made costly mistakes this season the speculation could continue to hinder Stoke.

The Verdict

It is up to Jones to manage his players and keep them happy, so he shouldn't blame the workings of the transfer window if players are showing discontent, and instead he should allow them to leave, as Stoke have been plagued with players not wanting to play for the club in recent years.

He has been able to recruit well over the summer and added ten players before the deadline, so cannot complain of a lack of time in the window either.

Jones needs to get everyone on board and focused in the right direction. If he is unable to do that it is a sign of his lack of management skills, and if players are unhappy then he should show zero discipline and place them in the youth team.
