It has been a busy week for Nathan Jones having left Luton Town last week to take over at Stoke City ahead of two games in four days.

The Potters started with a defeat under the Welshman having seen his new side go down 3-1 away to Brentford at the weekend.

A much-changed Stoke outfit set about looking to progress in the FA Cup after a 1-1 draw away at Shrewsbury in Gary Rowett’s final game in charge ended in a replay needing to be contested.

Stoke were 2-0 up thanks to a brace from Tyrese Campbell heading into half-time, and they were 20 minutes from securing a fourth-round tie at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers before an unexpected twist.

Three Shrewsbury goals in ten minutes put Stoke to the sword as they crashed out of the cup to lower league opposition.

And Jones had his say on the defeat post-match in a calm manor, despite admitting his shock at the defeat, when speaking to the Stoke Sentinel.

“I think you see a good starting point in terms of 69 minutes and we were pretty dominant,” said Jones afterwards.

“We were excellent first half and were totally dominant and had a glorious chance to make it 3-0, then at 2-1 to make it 3-1.

“You saw a real structure about us, but defensive frailties cost us.

“To go from cruising to losing in the space of 10 or 11 minutes is not good. I’m a little bit shocked in how we lost it.

“I think there was a momentum shift. They scored a very good goal, and we haven’t been used to winning a game on a regular basis and think `Oh, is it going to happen again? You have to get through that mental barrier.

“To go from the relative comfort to losing, it is something we have to address, and that comes with confidence, and at the moment that might be lacking.”

The verdict

It’s still early doors at Stoke City under Nathan Jones, so he was quite philosophical in defeat last night, despite admitting he was shocked with the outcome.

It was all looking rosy for Stoke, but a late collapse ended their hopes of moving into the next round.

Jones is right that there were plenty of positive, but he will have to rally his troops and get more of his ideas across before their home fixtures with league leaders Leeds United at the weekend.

It was a damaging defeat and only added to the dismay for Jones in his first week in charge at the Bet 365 Stadium
