Nathan Jones confirms that one Stoke City player is a doubt for Derby clash

Stoke City manager Nathan Jones has revealed that forward Nick Powell could miss the game against Derby County on Saturday due to a calf injury.

The Potters welcome Derby to the Bet 365 Stadium tomorrow and will be hoping to claim their first win in the Championship this season.

Stoke have made a poor start to Jones’ first season in charge, losing to QPR and Charlton Athletic in their opening two league games.

A 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday gave them their first win of the season and the Potters will be hoping for a similar result on the weekend.

It seems as though they may have to do that without Powell, as, speaking in a press conference ahead of the game, Jones indicated that he is carrying an injury.

The Stoke boss said: “Nick Powell is the only one who is a doubt for tomorrow with a calf injury.

“It is taking a little bit longer and we need to be careful with him.”

Powell joined from Wigan on a free transfer in the summer and made his debut against QPR on the opening weekend of the season.

He missed the Charlton game with an injury and it looks as though the Potters may now be without him for the visit of Derby.

Championship Picks

The Verdict

This will be a concern for Jones, who will be hoping that the forward recovers in time for the game against the Rams tomorrow.

Stoke have started the season poorly and their boss will want his full squad fit for their next test.

On his day, Powell is a fantastic forward and he showed last season for Wigan that he can thrive in the Championship–scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in 32 games.

It will be a huge boost for Stoke if the 25-year-old can recapture that form for his new club.
