Matt Penney became Charlton Athletic's third January addition over the weekend, arriving on loan from Ipswich Town for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old left back or left wing back spent the first half of the campaign at Motherwell, but will be keen to impress in the EFL in the coming months ahead of his deal expiring in Suffolk at the end of the season.

It does not seem like Penney is part of Kieran McKenna's plans at Portman Road, and the former Sheffield Wednesday man issued the following message when asked how important the loan spell in South London could be by the Addicks' media team.

He said: "It's important.

"Every game of football is important, there's always someone watching, so you never know what can come from any game.

"But for me, it's about doing the best I can on the pitch and every day in training.

"Keep improving, keep helping the team and what will be, will be, we'll see what happens in the summer.

"My thoughts are: just work hard everyday and do the best that I can to help the team."

Charlton have been crying out for a left footed left back this season, with Steven Sessegnon filling in well but having to manage a knee problem throughout the campaign.

The Verdict

The addition of Penney offers Holden greater flexibility, have been forced to change to a three at the back system in the club's last match, a 2-0 win over Barnsley, due to right back Todd Kane coming off injured after playing the vast majority of the first half in the left back position.

Penney's arrival would also given Holden the option to move Sessegnon over the right back when he returns to fitness, potentially allowing Sean Clare to be pushed into central midfield, which is the 26-year-old's specialist position despite not playing there since Nigel Adkins was in charge at The Valley.

It would be a surprise not to see Penney start against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
