Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has suggested that the club were interested in Marcus Maddison in the past, but opted to pursue alternative targets.

Maddison was a player in demand throughout the January transfer window, but he eventually made the move to Hull City on loan for the rest of the season from Peterborough United, and Rovers will be hoping that they do not live to regret not pursuing a move for the winger.

Mowbray’s side have suffered a host of injuries to some of their more creative players in recent weeks, with the likes of Bradley Dack, Lewis Holtby and Joe Rothwell all out injured, but Rovers failed to add any new signings in January, which suggests a move for Maddison would have helped to add some much needed extra creativity.

QUIZ: Can you name these 18 ex-Blackburn Rovers players?

Speaking to Blackburn Live ahead of Blackburn's meeting with Hull, Mowbray outlined that the club had entered into talks with Maddison over a potential move to Rovers in the past, but that the club elected to move for other targets instead, saying: "I've had some in-depth conversations with young Maddison, to be fair.

"It's something we've talked about and considered, but then we decided to go down a different route.

"I don't think you could not have an interest in Maddison because of the goals he scores and the goals he assists.

"At the times of our discussions over the last few years we decided to go down a different route but he's now got his opportunity to play in the Championship and the last game I saw, he hit the post very early on against Reading."

The Verdict:

These are very interesting comments from Mowbray, which suggest that he and the club were interested in adding Maddison to the squad at times over the last few transfer windows, but decided to make moves for other attacking players instead before he eventually joined Hull.

Maddison is clearly a player with plenty of creativity and ability to produce consistently in the final third, and that is something which Rovers could have really benefitted from, especially considering the amount of injuries they have suffered to their most creative players.

However, Hull only managed to negotiate a cheaper move for Maddison last month due to the winger being out of contract in the summer, and when Blackburn might have been trying to get player his valuation is likely to have been much higher.

For that reason, you can perhaps understand why Rovers decided against pursuing a move for Maddison, and Mowbray will now be hoping that the club do not go onto regret missing out on the winger when they were interested in bringing him to Ewood Park.
