Queens Park Rangers picked up a vital narrow victory over Wigan Athletic which helped them in a twofold manner.

On one hand, they picked up three points and charged up the table but the victory was also important in preventing Wigan from picking up any points as the Latics occupy the final spot inside the relegation zone.

The close encounter at Loftus Road finished with a 2-1 victory for the home side, who picked up back to back wins after their 4-1 thrashing of Birmingham City at St Andrew's on the weekend and the Hoops moved up to 15th.

This gave QPR a ten point cushion over the relegation spaces and fans will be starting to relax a bit more as we enter the final 13 games of the season.

It has been a disappointing season for QPR but Ian Holloway has turned things around somewhat.

This season may be written off but he will already be thinking ahead and he will need to keep these 2 players in the summer, even though they will attract interest from elsewhere.

Pawel Wszolek

Talented winger Pawel Wszolek signed a permanent deal with QPR in January after shining for the West London outfit.

With three goals in eighteen appearances, the Poland international has earned many plaudits for his displays down the flanks.

Chelsea have previously expressed an interest in the 24-year-old so QPR might be lucky to keep him in the summer if he can maintain his level of performance.

Alex Smithies

He may have recently signed a new contract but that does not guarantee that Alex Smithies' future lies beyond this summer at QPR.

What it does mean is that if the talented goalkeeper does leave, QPR are entitled to a reasonable fee.

Money will be no compensation for losing the former Huddersfield stopper, though, as his fine performances between the sticks have ultimately earned QPR so many points this season that they would be in real trouble without him.
