Millwall have had a pretty inauspicious campaign so far, sitting 20th in the division, five points clear of the relegation zone.

It has been a stark contrast this year compared to their heroics of last season, with the level the team performed at dipping somewhat.

Personnel changes, along with the task of competing in the Championship becoming more strenuous that it had been taking their toll.

Things have looked up in recent weeks with an upturn in form and a supreme win over Everton in the FA Cup to knock the Premier League side out.

Team selection has been an issue for Neil Harris who has had to deal with injuries and players out of form more so than at any stage last season.

It is safe to say it has been a much more difficult campaign than the first time around.

And the players have been a part of that with their performances, and even now, a team is being selected that doesn’t necessarily reflect the best current XI available to the Lions boss.

With that said, on current form, this is the best Millwall XI available to Harris.

With the players available to Harris, a 4-3-3 formation would suit the individuals who are in their best form at present.

Jordan Archer stays in goal despite some questionable performances as of late, because Ben Amos is injured and David Martin has not played, so in a way, he has defaulted the position.

In the back four, Murray Wallace keeps James Meredith out the side, on the pitch and in this XI too.

Having come to form in the Everton win and showing real competence in the left-back role before and after the FA Cup tie.

He has been a better player in that position than at centre-half.

Jake Cooper and Shaun Hutchinson’s formidable partnership at the back persists with the former having the season of his life.

Mahlon Romeo is consistently performing well and has not had a bad game in quite a while.

He is performing well getting forward as well as remembering his defensive responsibilities, too.

A midfield three, which may come as a surprise, does not have Shaun Williams or Ryan Leonard in.

Instead, on current form, the returning Ben Thompson, who has carried on from where he left off from his loan at Portsmouth has been impressive.

So too has Ryan Tunnicliffe, who was unfortunate to be dropped in the draw with Rotherham United after his battling display in the win over Everton

Much of the work he does goes unnoticed, and that has been lacking when he has not played.

The midfield pairing deserve their place in this XI, and ahead of them is the mercurial Jed Wallace.

In the number ten role, which suits his game down to a tee, his pace and guile give the Lions a real outlet in attack and without him, they lack a little bit of persistence to get the ball forward.

Lee Gregory leads the line on his own and has been impressive all season up top.

Despite his glaring miss last weekend, the striker’s hold-up play and intelligence in attack make him undroppable.

To the left of him is Shane Ferguson, who has arguably been Millwall’s best player in the last six weeks and deserves to be starting.

Especially after Saturday’s stalemate against Rotherham where Millwall lacked his direct running style and willingness to get cross in the box.

On the right of a front three is loanee Ben Marshall.

There have been glimpses of the loanee’s form since returning from Norwich, and he could well be a vital part to his Millwall side’s hope of surviving relegation come the end of the season
