Portsmouth did not play at the weekend due to international fixtures and that handed Argyle the opportunity to climb to the summit on Sunday lunchtime.

The Verdict

The manner of the victory, in coming from behind against a team heavily fancied for automatic promotion has to fuel belief within the group and in the supporter base.

It would have been tough for some Argyle supporters to forget about their 5-0 drubbing at home to Milton Keynes Dons on the final day of last term, that saw them miss out on the top six, but the home faithful will now be fully on board with Steven Schumacher's promotion push.

Whittaker has demonstrated his class in patches over the last few years at Derby County, Swansea City and Lincoln City, and Argyle feels like a good fit at this stage of his career, to show what he is capable of before playing in the Championship with regularity next season.
