QPR remain without a manager at the moment and will be surely looking to change that sooner rather than later.

Steve McClaren was shown the door on the back of an awful run of form and the R's now need someone that is going to get them mathematically safe in rapid fashion.

Who comes in remains to be seen, of course, but Michael Appleton appears to be one man linked with the Standard suggesting as such.

What would the former Oxford United manager bring to the club if he joined, though? And what would the potential impacts be of his theoretical arrival?

We take a closer look at what might unfold...

More kids given a chance?

Appleton has spent most of his post-playing career as a coach rather than a manager.

He is highly-rated in the game in such a role and it is clear that he knows how to bring young players into senior teams.

QPR have a famed ability of doing just that and, as McClaren was signed to help coach these youngsters, Appleton might be too.

Certainly, he seems ideal in that respect.

Tight budget maintained

Whoever QPR appoint will have to work on a small budget for now but Appleton, in particular, seems a man capable of doing just that.

He's been at the likes of Portsmouth, Blackpool and Oxford United to varying levels of success and so knows how to operate in a similar financial environment to the one at the R's .

Early doubts may need to be silenced

Appleton did brilliantly at Oxford United but, at the moment, he is perhaps arguably still seen as more of a coach than a manager.

Times at Blackpool and Portsmouth were tough, but as a coach he has worked at the very highest of levels.

He's got plenty going for him to make himself a success if appointed, but he may need to prove himself quickly as a manager at Loftus Road with fans desperate for their new man to be the right man for years to come.
